Tarot Cards

The standard pack of tarot cards today is composed of four suits of 14 cards each. These 56 cards make up the minor arcana. The major arcana, or trumps, contains an additional 22 cards decorated with figures representing natural laws, elements, virtues and vices. The unnumbered figure of the fool has come down to us as the joker in everyday card playing. Read more about Tarot Cards

While experts recognized many existing versions of the accurate order of the trumps, the following is one that is widely accepted:

Tarot Reading as a Divination Tool

The tarot reading is usually viewed as a tool for divination. A traditional tarot reading involves someone who is looking for answers to personal questions (seeker) and someone who knows how to interpret the cards (reader). After the seeker has shuffled and cut the deck, the reader places the chosen cards in a pattern (usually called a spread). Each position in the spread has a meaning, and each card has a meaning as well. The reader combines these two meanings to shed light on the seeker's question. It seems like a simple process, but rarely presented in a simple way.

Some religions shun the cards, and the scientific community condemns them as symbols of unreason, a legacy from an unenlightened past. Let us set aside these grey images for now and consider the tarot reading simply for what it is - a deck of picture cards.

Understanding different tarot reading styles

This page focuses on how readers combine spreads, symbolism, intuition and conversation. In common spiritual terminology, clairvoyance refers to claimed visual or symbolic impressions, clairaudience refers to claimed auditory impressions, and mediumship refers to claimed communication connected with a person who has died. Some practitioners use one term, while others combine several approaches.

A reading can be approached as a structured conversation for entertainment, reflection or exploring possibilities. It should not remove your ability to make your own decisions. Be cautious of anyone who guarantees a prediction, creates fear, asks for secrecy, demands escalating payments or says that only they can remove a curse or prevent disaster.

Useful questions before proceeding

  • What experience and boundaries does the practitioner describe?
  • Can the service be ended without pressure or further payment?
  • Is the reading clearly framed as entertainment or reflection?
